Zhenyuan Tower, commonly known as Drum Tower, is located in the center of Zhangye, where four streets from east to west, north and south meet. It is the largest existing drum tower in the Hexi Corridor.
The Drum Tower is modeled after the Bell Tower in Xi’an. It has a square plan and is built on a brick altar. The bottom of the platform is 32 meters wide and 9 meters high. The base to the top is more than 30 meters. The building is a three-story wooden tower with cornices. The carved beams and painted buildings are elegant and solemn, completely a traditional Chinese architectural form. There are cross holes downstairs, leading to east, west, north and south, allowing pedestrians and small vehicles to pass. There is a plaque inlaid above the cave door, which reads “Xu Sheng in the east, Jia City in the west, Ying Xun in the south, Zhen Yuan in the north.” It is only open to the public during some festivals and exhibitions, and the ticket price varies according to the exhibition.
