In 1900, when Wang Yuanlu, a Taoist priest who lived in Zangjing Cave (Cave No. 17), was renovating a Taoist temple and cleaning it, he accidentally discovered a small door on the wall of the north corridor. After opening it, a square cave room appeared, which contained artifacts from the 4th century to the 11th century. There are more than 50,000 documents and paper paintings, silk paintings, embroidery and other cultural relics from the past dynasties (from the Sixteenth Kingdom to the Northern Song Dynasty). This is the famous Sutra Cave.
In the thirty-fourth year of the reign of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty (1908), Taoist priest Wang Yuanlu presided over the construction of the Taoist temple “Sanqing Palace” opposite the three-story building of Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang, commonly known as “Xiasi”, which is now the “Dunhuang Sutra Cave Exhibition Hall”. Pavilion”. There are 14 strange animals and characters painted on the front porch beams and front eaves of this Taoist temple.
