This cave is located at the western end of the East District. It is the largest grotto in Yungang. The shape of the cave is unique, and its plane is concave. Judging from the appearance, it is different from ordinary caves. At its bottom are two cave doors, which lead into the inner cave and seem to be cave doors; the small east cave is its own door and is connected to the inner cave. The tops of the two small holes form a large platform. There are remains of square towers on the east and west sides of the platform, with about three floors. The weathering is very severe. There is a statue niche in the middle, with two bright windows on both sides of the niche to illuminate the cave. There is a row of 12 large rectangular beam holes at the highest point above the open window. Above the beam hole is the top of the mountain, and there used to be “several stone chambers” on the top. Grottoes like Cave 3 are a rare object in the Yungang Grottoes and are rare among grottoes in the country. The third cave is a mysterious cave. It is so huge, wide and far-reaching that it feels like a natural cave.
Look at the cave again. Enter the inner cave from the west small cave. The cave is very big. The shape of the cave is also very irregular. Its plane is concave, with a base width of more than 40 meters, a depth of 15 meters on both sides, and a height of nearly 20 meters. In such a huge cave, only three large Buddha statues are carved. These three statues are carved on the west side of the protruding wall, occupying only one third of the wall. The carvings of these three-body statues are very exquisite and different from other Yungang statues. Apart from this, there are no other statues on the walls of the cave.
