During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, many people went out to do business in Yancun, Sixi, Wuyuan. Commercial houses became a beautiful sight in Yancun, among which Yuqingtang was quite distinctive. Yuqingtang was built during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty. It is the former residence of Jin Wenjian, a famous local tea merchant. Jin Wenjian did business in Nanjing in his early years and later became the president of Jiangning Chamber of Commerce. “Yuqingtang” was built by Jin Wenjian’s second son, Jin Shiqiu. Jin Shiqiu started doing business with his father at the age of sixteen. Because he was good at business, he always had a surplus, so he named the house Yuqingtang. In feudal society, merchants were rich but not noble, and had the lowest status among “scholars, farmers, industry and commerce”. Therefore, its residence cannot be built as grand and luxurious as the official residence. The court also stipulated that the doors of merchants should not be opened facing due south. The entire facade of Yuqingtang is the Chinese character “Shang”. The door shield and gate tower form the upper part of the Chinese character “Shang”. The bluestone door pillars are the Chinese character “口”. The blue bricks are built outside the door pillars to form the Chinese character “门”.
