The East Gate Tower, also known as “Shengheng”, is one of the four major gates of Fenghuang Ancient City. It is located in the east of Fenghuang Ancient City, Fenghuang County, Xiangxi Prefecture, Hunan Province, facing Dongling and close to the Tuojiang River. It is simple and elegant.
It was first built in the 54th year of Emperor Kangxi’s reign in the Qing Dynasty (1715). The style of its tower is similar to that of Beijing’s front gate built with city bricks. It has two floors with four openings on each floor. It is 11 meters high and has a gabled roof. The lower floor is covered with waist eaves and cornices. The shape is solemn and majestic.
The city gate is 3.5 meters wide and 4 meters high. It is in the shape of an arch. The two doors of the city gate are wrapped in iron sheets and tightly nailed with large round-headed iron nails.
