Wenchang Gate is located on the south side of Xi’an Forest of Steles Museum. It is one of the newly opened city gates after the founding of New China. Kuixing Tower is built on this section of the city wall, which houses the statue of Kuixing. It is the only facility on the Xi’an city wall that has nothing to do with military defense. Kuixing is one of the twenty-eight constellations in ancient Chinese astronomy. Folk myths and legends say that it governs the rise and fall of literary fortunes. In the minds of Confucian scholars, Kuixing has the supreme status. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Xi’an Fuxue and Confucius Temple were built next to the city wall, where the Forest of Steles Museum is today, so Kuixing Tower was also built on the city wall. It was restored when the city gate was opened in 1986. Visitors here can see Kuixing Zunnong, holding a red pen in his right hand, an ink fountain in his left hand, and the head of a big turtle under his feet. Outside Wenchang Gate, you can go west along Shuncheng Lane to the Kibi Zhenbei Memorial Park. It was built in 1986 to commemorate the 1,250th anniversary of Kibi Zhenbei’s introduction of Tang culture to Japan. In the park, a Kibi Zhenbei monument was built on a piece of uncut natural granite on the site of the original Imperial College of the Tang Dynasty.
