The ancient village of Wangkou was built in the Daguan period by Yu Gao, a senior official of the Song Dynasty (third grade). It has a history of more than 1,100 years. It is named “Wangkou” because it is located at the confluence of two rivers and has clear water. The descendants of those who first moved there were as long as water, taking the meaning of “the river will last forever” in “Poetry·Zhounan·Hanguang”, also known as “Yongchuan”. It is one of the third batch of Chinese historical and cultural towns and villages by the State Council.
.
The ancient village is located in a hilly area, surrounded by green mountains and flowing green water. There is a poem that goes: “The chirping of birds and the crow of cocks spread outside the country, and the scenery of water and mountains enters the pavilion.” The scenery is very pleasant. Since the Song Dynasty, Wangkou’s writing style has flourished and talents have emerged in large numbers. Among them: 5 Jinshi, 2 Juren, 7 officials, 36 civil and military officials above the seventh rank, 10 bachelors, and 33 volumes of works. Therefore, it is known as the “Hometown of Books”.
In ancient times, Wangkou was the only place that the land route from Huizhou Fucheng to Raozhou in Jiangxi passed through Wuyuan. It was also connected to the Northeast Township waterway from Wuyuan County, and was the wharf for freight to Leping, Poyang, Jiujiang and other places. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, there were many shops here, merchants gathered here, and the scene was prosperous. Although it has gone through thousands of years of vicissitudes, there are many historical relics left behind.
The Yu Clan Ancestral Hall is located in Wangkou Village, Jiangwan Town, 30 kilometers northeast of Wuyuan County, covering an area of more than 1,000 square meters. The building is built in the Qing Dynasty Xieshan style with a central axis. It is majestic, rigorous in layout, exquisite in craftsmanship and unique in style. It is praised as an “art treasure house” by ancient architecture experts.
