Shuanglin Temple, formerly known as Zhongdu Temple, looks like a castle-like building from the outside. There are rammed earth walls around the temple and the temple is in the middle.
The layout of the whole temple is complete, with a total of ten halls and three courtyards. The west is the temple, and the east is the sutra room, Zen courtyard and monks’ residence. On the central axis, there are the Tianwang Hall, Sakyamuni Hall, Mahavira Hall and Buddha Mother Hall.
The Sakyamuni Hall in Shuanglin Temple is simple in shape. The four walls of the temple are decorated with murals to show the process of Sakyamuni becoming a Buddha. It is worthy of the name of “Treasure House of Oriental Colored Sculpture Art” and is also known as “Ancient Sculpture Museum”. The 18 Arhat statues in the Arhat Hall are the essence of the colorful sculptures in the temple.
