What is displayed in the Shanghai Historical Collection Museum is only a small part of Mr. Zhang Jianming’s tens of thousands of collections, but it is already a dazzling array of beautiful objects. Various large and small maps published in various periods of old Shanghai are hung on the entire wall. On the desk at the entrance of the stairs is an old-fashioned telephone and an English version of the Shanghai telephone directory from the 1940s, as well as old books and periodicals. The magazine shows the customs of all walks of life and the various scenes of the market in old Shanghai during the Republic of China. The physical objects on display are even richer: from gas lamps, biscuit cans, and milk bottles, to staplers, blood pressure monitors, and Fahrenheit thermometers, to fire extinguishers, batons, car license plates, bicycle license plates, house numbers, and even Citibank checkbooks, and Two scales with a history of more than a hundred years, a pair of “Heming” brand men’s leather shoes handmade in the 1930s… all uniquely reflect the living conditions of the people at that time.
