The ruins of the Great Wall of the Han Dynasty were built in the second year of Yuanshou (121 BC), the reign of Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty, and ended in the fourth year of Taichu (101 BC). In the west, it starts from Wanyaodun at the western end of present-day Dunhuang City, along the Shule River through Houkengzi, Yumenguan, and Dayueya Lake. It leads to Anxi from three piers, passes through West Lake, Wanghuobao, Bulongji, and Qiaowan, and passes through the Beishi River in Yumen City. Along the coast, after entering the Golden Pagoda, you can go north to Juyan along the weak water. The other route starts from Jinta along the Heihe River, passes through Gaotai, Linze, Zhangye, Shandan, passes through Yongchang, Minqin, Wuwei, Gulang, Yongdeng and other places, and crosses the Yellow River to Ningxia. It has a total length of more than 1,000 kilometers in Gansu.
The Great Wall of the Han Dynasty was an important part of the complete military defense system in Hexi during the Han Dynasty. It was also the historical epitome of the Western Han Dynasty’s construction of defense projects in Hexi and even the entire north. Although it has been eroded by wind and rain for thousands of years, it still stands tall in the Gobi desert. It is one of the most well-preserved Han Great Walls in China.
