·It connects to Changmen, “the first and second-class rich and romantic place in the world of mortals”, to the east, and to Huqiu, “the first scenic spot in Wuzhong”, to the west, about seven miles long.
·It was built by Bai Juyi, the great poet of the Tang Dynasty, who recruited workers to dig river embankments when he was the governor of Suzhou. It has a history of more than 1,100 years.
·It was once one of the streets with the most developed commerce and culture in China during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. It was known as “the first ancient street in China” and “the epitome of old Suzhou and the window of Wu culture”.
·A folk song goes: “There is heaven above, and Suzhou and Hangzhou below. There is the West Lake in Hangzhou, and there are mountain ponds in Suzhou. Two good places, infinite scenery.”
· Shantang Street at night is very artistic and suitable for taking pictures. You can also find a teahouse to drink tea, listen to Pingtan, and experience the traditional culture of old Suzhou.
