The ancient county government office of Pingyao is hidden next to the Tingyu Tower in the south of the city. It was first built in the Northern Wei Dynasty and is the best-preserved ancient government office in China.
The county government office is divided into three roads: left, middle and right. On the central axis from south to north are the government office, Yimen, archway, lobby, house gate, second hall, inner house, etc., and extend outward to Nanheng Street. The ancient county government office can be called the epitome of an imperial palace in terms of architectural layout and functional settings. Here you can see various ancient documents and a large number of ancient torture instruments, which basically preserve the characteristics of the Ming and Qing yamen with a solemn momentum. There is also the Guanyun Tower behind the county government office, where the county magistrate observed the weather in the four townships every day after tea and meals, reflecting the status of ancient Pingyao agriculture in the feudal economy.
