The Panchen Palace was built in the Year of the Iron Tiger in the Tibetan calendar (1650, the seventh year of Shunzhi in the Qing Dynasty). The Dalajang Palace was built high on the west slope of Lotus Mountain. It was the palace of the Dalai Lama and the Panchen Lama when they came to Kumbum Monastery. It was also the office and Kumbum Monastery. It has served as the palace of Fatai. In the 7th year of Shunzhi of the Qing Dynasty (1650), when the eighth Fatai Quexi Huadan Gyatso was appointed, it was built with funding from Cai Wangdanjin, the Mongolian prince of Oirat. It was also called the “Auspicious New Palace” and was originally a Han-style palace. In 1687, it was expanded into a Tibetan-style building with four columns, eight beams and three courtyards according to the plan of the 16th Fatai Ajia Sirao Zangbu.
