The Eight Wai Temples are the collective name for the eight Tibetan Buddhist temples in the northeastern part of the Chengde Summer Resort in Hebei Province. From the 52nd year of Emperor Kangxi’s reign to the 45th year of Emperor Qianlong’s reign in the Qing Dynasty, eight outer temples were built successively. At that time, there were a total of forty temples directly under the Lifanyuan in Beijing and Chengde, 32 in the capital and eight in Chengde. Since Chengde was located outside Beijing and the Great Wall, it was called the Eight Outer Temples; including Puren Temple and Pushan Temple. (now gone), Puning Temple, Anyuan Temple, Putuo Zongcheng Temple, Shuxiang Temple, Xumi Fushou Temple, Guangyuan Temple. Most temple buildings are built on mountains, and some special techniques are used in the layout. For example, the axial symmetry and free-style layout are combined, the terrain is cleverly used to solve the problem of plane height difference, and artificial rockeries are stacked to increase the interest of the space. In terms of plane proportions, similar proportions of graphics and rectangular compositions are used many times to achieve a sense of harmony. In particular, the layout of the second half of Puning Temple is a group of 19 buildings including Mahayana Pavilion, Lama Pagoda, and small halls, forming a Buddhist “mandala” embodied in buildings, using symbolic techniques to express the kingdom of heaven in Buddhist scriptures. In the world, this kind of layout is rare in the history of Chinese architecture.
