Ningshou Palace is located in the Palace Museum at No. 4 Jingshanqian Street, Dongcheng District. It occupies a large rectangular courtyard in the northeastern part of the palace. During the Ming Dynasty, there were only a few sparse palaces here, which were used for the retirement of the queen mother and concubines. During the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty, Emperor Kangxi built the Ningshou Palace in the 22nd year of Kangxi in order to allow the Empress Dowager to take care of herself. The palace that Emperor Qianlong prepared for himself after his abdication. It took 5 years to expand and renovate Ningshou Palace, forming the layout you see today.
