·Cave No. 96. This cave was excavated in the early Tang Dynasty and is the largest Buddha in Mogao Grottoes. Enshrined inside is the world’s largest indoor statue of Maitreya Buddha, a clay body sitting cross-legged.
·The production method of the Big Buddha is stone clay sculpture, that is, the general shape of the Buddha statue is carved out of the stone sandstone on the cliff, then it is molded with grass mud, finely molded with hemp mud, and finally colored. Due to many reconstructions, this giant Buddha has lost its original appearance as a Tang Dynasty sculpture, but it still retains its majestic momentum.
·The building in front of the cave is nine-story, so named because it has nine floors in total. It has towering peaks, scattered eaves and teeth, and a jingling iron horse, which has become one of the symbols of the Mogao Grottoes.
