Qixia Mou’s Manor was built in the first year of Yongzheng in the Qing Dynasty (1723). It is where several generations of the Mou Molin family, the largest landowner in northern China during the Qing Dynasty, lived together. This courtyard-style building complex with the characteristics of Jiaodong folk houses is divided into three groups and six courtyards. The gate, living room, dormitory, workshop, powder warehouse, etc. constitute a multi-entry courtyard. It is known as the “Jiaodong Folk Museum”.
If the Grand View Garden in “A Dream of Red Mansions” is a microcosm of the built society in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, then Mou’s Manor is a microcosm of the feudal society in the late Qing Dynasty.
The Mou family, the owners of this manor, are originally from Gong’an County, Hubei Province. Its ancestor Mou Jingzu started his official career in Qixia in the early Ming Dynasty and chose to live in the ancient town of Ducun. Their descendants relied on their power to amass money. By the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China, the Mou family’s family business entered its heyday, with 60,000 acres of land and 120,000 acres of mountains, and an annual income of more than 3.3 million kilograms. It once became a wealthy Jiaodong family, famous for its wealth. A big landowner in Yangqilu.
If you are rich, you will build houses, which is a great hobby of farmers. The Mou family is very wealthy. As a result, a large amount of money was spent on building manors.
