·The Leshou Hall, Cixi’s residence in the Summer Palace in Beijing, was originally a Qingyi Garden building in the 15th year of Qianlong (1750 AD). It is also the main building in the living area of the Summer Palace. It was Qianlong’s mother, Empress Xiaoshengxian, who was celebrating her 60th birthday. In order to celebrate her mother’s 60th birthday, Qianlong renovated the original Wengshan Mountain and West Lake in the 14th year of Qianlong’s reign. It was destroyed in the 10th year of Xianfeng (1860 AD), repaired in the 7th year of Jiaqing (1802), and rebuilt in the 17th year of Guangxu (1891). Leshou Hall faces Kunming Lake, has Longevity Mountain at its back, reaches Renshou Hall in the east, and is connected to the promenade in the west. It is the best place to live and play in the park. In front of the hall, there is the “Leshou Hall”, the pier where Cixi sailed, with a black background and a horizontal plaque with gold characters in Guangxu’s handwriting. The Leshou Hall is equipped with a throne, royal desk, palm fan and glass screen. Next to the seat are two large blue dragon flower disks for holding fruits and scenting them, and four large nine-peach copper stoves for burning sandalwood. The west suite is the bedroom, and the east suite is the dressing room.
·At the back of Leshou Hall, there is a purple magnolia growing in a cluster; there is a white magnolia on the south side of the east gate of the corridor, Yaoyue Gate. They are the two oldest magnolia trees in the garden. They were built by Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty. It was planted in the Yiyuan Garden (the predecessor of the Summer Palace), more than 200 years ago.
