Kanjing Temple is located on the north side of Wanfogou Valley in Dongshan, Longmen. It is the largest cave in Dongshan. It was excavated by Wu Zetian for Emperor Gaozong of the Tang Dynasty. On the front of the cave is a two-story brick structure built in the Qing Dynasty, with the words “Kanjing Temple” engraved on the forehead. There is a lotus caisson carved on the top of the cave, surrounded by four plump and graceful flying apsaras. Kanjing Temple is the largest cave in the Dongshan Grottoes in the Longmen Grottoes Scenic Area. It was excavated during the period of Wu Zetian. There are dozens of small niche statues on the cliff wall of the front room; they have a flat top, a square plane, and four vertical walls. The twenty-nine ancestors of the Arhats who have passed down the law are carved on the lower part of the three walls with an average height of 180 cm. They are the most exquisite Arhat group statues in the Tang Dynasty in my country. It was published according to Fei Changfang’s “Magical Treasures of the Past Dynasties” written by Fei Changfang of the Sui Dynasty.
There is a lotus caisson carved on the top of the cave of Kanjing Temple, surrounded by four plump and graceful flying apsaras. In addition, there are three round sculptured seated Buddhas from the Song Dynasty placed in the cave. Nine rows of small thousand Buddha statues are carved on the south wall. In addition to several rows of small thousand Buddha statues, there are some lotus flowers on the north wall to support Bodhisattvas. The biggest difference from other caves of the same period is that there is no main image on the main wall of the cave. Instead, an altar is built in the center of the cave floor with a Buddha statue on it for people to worship.
The first Arhat statue from west to east on the south wall of Kansutra Temple is the statue of Kasyapa, the first of the ten disciples of Sakyamuni. It was lost overseas in the 1930s and was returned here by the Canadian government in 2001.
