The Sutra Hall is the largest building in the Kumbum Monastery. It was first built in the 34th year of Wanli in the Ming Dynasty (1606 AD). It is the place where the lamas of the temple gather to chant sutras. It is also one of the four major academies of the Kumbum Monastery, the Xianzong Sutra Hall. The school houses thousands of gilded bronze statues of Master Tsongkhapa, as well as the seats of the Dalai Lama, the Panchen Lama and the monastery’s general altar. In the corridor of the main sutra hall, there are many believers and monks kowtowing. Most of them are Tibetan herdsmen who have come from afar. Kowtowing is a full-prostrate kowtow, also called “five-body prostrations”. Most of them do this Kowtow 100,000 times to express devotion to the Buddha.
