·It was originally a plank bridge surrounded by red railings, hence the name “Red Bridge”. During the Qianlong period, it was rebuilt into a stone bridge. Because the bridge resembled a rainbow lying on waves, it was renamed “Hongqiao”. It was one of the twenty-four scenic spots in the Qing Dynasty.
·In ancient times, literati often held pen meetings and poetry meetings here, and composed essays and poems. Due to the poet’s chant, Yangzhou Hongqiao became famous. The Hongqiao was changed from a one-hole bridge to a three-hole bridge. The bridge deck was widened, the bridge body was elongated, and the bridge slope was reduced, making it more spectacular than the original bridge.
·If Slender West Lake is compared to a classical beauty, it is Hongqiao who lifts her veil; if Slender West Lake is compared to a long drama, it is Hongqiao who opens the curtain on her.
