Since the shape of the caves and the layout of the statues in the caves are basically the same, Cave 7 and Cave 8 are also called double caves. The shape is a rectangular plane with a front and rear chamber; the front chamber originally had a wooden roof built on the cliff face. There are carved tower pillars outside the front room. There are stele in the front room of the two caves, and there is a turtle under the stele. There is a south passage cut into the back of the front chamber of the two caves to connect them.
The layout of the cave: the main statue is located in the upper and lower niches on the back wall of the back room, and the other three walls are arranged in layers. In the front room, on the left wall of Cave 7 and the right wall of Cave 8, there are long scroll-style reliefs carved in layers and columns, with a double-story pavilion in the middle. The arduous journey of Sakyamuni’s pursuit of enlightenment is depicted in Cave 7. When you walk past these more than 30 relief paintings, Sakyamuni’s extraordinary life will be clearly presented in front of you. This was probably the original sculptor’s wish.
Thousands of Buddhas are carved on the right wall of Cave 7 and the left wall of Cave 8. The lower part of each wall of the front room of the two caves is carved with a procession of donors and a procession of kneeling offerings to heaven, and an imitation wooden structure is carved above the procession of donors.
