Cave 5 is a relatively mature cave excavated in the middle period of Yungang Grottoes. It was probably excavated during the Taihe period of Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei Dynasty (470 to 494 AD). The cave was excavated with royal investment, so the cave space and the Buddha statues are very large. The overall cave is oval in plane, with a dome on top, and the main image is the layout of the third generation Buddha. , whose main image is the image of Sakyamuni. With a height of 17 meters, it has become the tallest among the tens of thousands of stone Buddhas in Yungang. More than 100 people can stand on its knees. The middle finger is 2.3 meters long and the distance between the two knees is 14.3 meters. She can be called the crown of the ten thousand Buddhas in Yungang Grottoes, just like the Yuan Dynasty Buddha. The contemporary poet Wang Du wrote, “The towering peaks and dangerous pavilions are at the same level as the sky, and the world is low everywhere when you look down on it.” According to legend, this Buddha was carved by Emperor Xiaowen for his father, Emperor Xianwen Tuobahong. There are more than 2,300 large and small statues in Cave 5 with exquisite carvings. It is one of the better preserved caves in Yungang Grottoes.
