Shennongding has two concepts, which are easily confused by ordinary travelers. One concept is Shennongding Scenic Area (including Golden Monkey Ridge, Big and Small Longtan, Central China Roof, Shennong Valley, Watchtower, Banbi Cliff, Taizi Ya and other scattered scenic spots), and the other is Shennongding. One concept is the “real Shennongding” - that is, the highest point of Shennongjia, the “Roof of Central China”.
These attractions can be reached by car, and they also have parking lots, so parking is very convenient. But it should be noted that some places are mainly observation decks (such as the Observation Tower, Banbi Cliff, and Taizi Ya). You can quickly come out to take pictures at the observation deck, while some scenic spots (such as Shennong Valley, Central China Rooftop) must be hiked. Each scenic spot takes 3 to 4 hours and requires strong physical strength to complete.
Therefore, you have to make some choices when driving in Shennongding.
- If you are traveling with the elderly or children, try to avoid climbing to Shennongding (Roof of Central China) and going down to Shennong Valley.
Shennongding has an altitude of 3106.2, and the highest altitude among the Five Mountains is Beiyue Hengshan, with an altitude of about 2000 meters.
There are 2999 levels in the Qingyun Ladder. The whole journey is on foot. There is no cable car or battery car, and there are no mechanized auxiliary tools that can be used. You go up step by step. As many steps as you go up, you have to take as many steps back to the original path.
Although there are only more than 2,000 steps, don’t ignore the 2,680-meter-high altitude under the Qingyun Ladder, with a vertical drop of nearly 500 meters, a 45-degree angle, and almost no turning steps. As a person who doesn’t exercise much, I suffered from altitude sickness. The probability is very high.
Looking down from here, you can no longer see the end of the mountain. In fact, we have only walked 600 levels here…
At this time, most of the hikers, including the young and middle-aged ones, had obviously lost their initial enthusiasm and ambition. They were already out of breath and had to hold on to the chains to leave!
This is only halfway up the mountain, and it will be very cold as long as there is a little rain in the mountains. It was 28 degrees at the bottom of the mountain, but because of the sudden rain, it was only 9 degrees here. Many people give up when they get here.
At the last level 999, there are not many people left.
When you get to the top of the mountain, you won’t be able to see anything if it’s raining or foggy. Sad, right?
Therefore, unless you are a summit enthusiast or a hiking enthusiast, otherwise, do not challenge this “Qingyun Ladder”. It takes 3 to 4 hours to go back and forth. If the elderly and children can no longer walk halfway, or have problems with their legs, feet, or body, they can only carry it on their backs. There is no other way. Therefore, as the only person among 10 friends who successfully challenged me that day, I really do not recommend this section to the elderly and children.
The situation in Shennong Valley is almost the same as that in Shennongding. go down valley
You have to hike, and you have to go up as many steps as you go down, and the round trip takes about 3 hours. Therefore, especially those who are short on time and lack physical strength, don’t try it easily. Why not just take a souvenir photo of Shennong Valley from the observation deck.
- Jinhouling and Jinhouxi are ideal places for self-driving tours, and the elderly and children can also go there.
The relative difficulty level of Jinhouling is much lower, and the physical requirements are obviously lower than Qingyun Ladder and Shennong Valley. When driving by yourself, you can choose to go down the river, or you can choose to go up the river, and leave the driver to wait on the other side. Go back.
Along the way, the springs are tinkling, the air is fresh, the ancient trees are towering, and the quiet mountains and forests on the tree-lined road make you feel relaxed and happy.

The forest area is vast and the altitude is high, so it has its own microclimate, which is completely different from Yichang. It is common for it to be sunny and rainy, cold and hot. The driving speed in rainy and foggy weather is only about 10 meters, so be sure to pay attention to safety.
The main viewing platforms of Shennongding Scenic Area, such as Shennong Valley, Watchtower, Banbi Cliff, Taizi Ya, etc., are all on the road from Shennongding to Dajiu Lake (Pingqian Ancient Town).
If you plan to go to Dajiu Lake, you can go to the observation deck to take pictures on the way to Dajiu Lake after visiting Golden Monkey Ridge, or on the way back from Dajiu Lake. Just make a plan.
Shennongjia is very beautiful. We drove there for 4 days and still felt unsatisfied. The weather was good and bad. Personally, I think the most suitable scenic spot in Shennongjia for a leisurely self-driving tour by the whole family is Dajiu Lake. Because there is a small tour train that you can get on and off at any time, you can partially hike, and you can also get on the train at any time.
In addition to the most difficult Rooftop of Central China and Shennong Valley, others such as
Tianshengqiao, Guanmen Mountain, Shennongtan, and Tianyan Scenic Area all require hiking.
But the physical requirements are relatively low.
