Hello subject,
Chengde
How to play in the Summer Resort and what is worth seeing?
I will give you a short answer below, because if I explain everything in detail, I can write a travelogue. You should first understand the general direction and overview, and then slowly explore and discover on your own.
The Summer Resort was built by Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty, and there were deep political considerations in choosing its location. To the north, it can communicate with Inner and Outer Mongolia; to the northwest, it can communicate with various Mongolian and Hui tribes, even as far as Xinjiang; to the east, it can connect with the Northeast; and to the south, it can control the Central Plains. Although the villa was built for political purposes, it has become a model of the perfect combination of Chinese imperial palaces and royal gardens. Therefore, what we look at in the Summer Resort is the palace architecture and garden structure of the Qing Dynasty.
The Summer Resort was first built in 1703. It took 89 years to complete during the Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong dynasties of the Qing Dynasty, with a total area of 5.64 million square meters. The summer resort adopts the style of a simple and elegant mountain village, taking the true nature of the natural landscape and absorbing the scenery of the south of the Yangtze River and the north of the Great Wall. Jiangnan gardens emphasize the use of rockeries, lake rocks, potted plants, etc. Even though there are ancient trees and hillsides in the Summer Palace, they are still not comparable to the Summer Resort that incorporates entire mountains, entire streams, and entire lakes. Ji Xiaolan commented on the Summer Resort: “The mountains and waters are all natural; the colors of the trees and the sounds of the springs are not from the world.” It couldn’t be more appropriate.
The Summer Resort is divided into four parts: the palace area, the lake area, the plain area, and the mountain area. The entire mountain resort has water in the southeast, mountains in the northwest, and plains in the northeast. It is the epitome of China’s natural landforms. The gardening of the villa is based on natural methods without any carving. More than 120 groups of buildings are integrated among the mountains, rivers and trees, forming a magnificent landscape that combines the beauty of the south and the beauty of the north, and combines the national scenic spots in one garden.
The general tour sequence is to enter from the main gate - Li Zhengmen, visit the palace area, then go to the right to visit the lake area, and then arrive at the plain area. After finishing the tour of the plain area, return to the palace area. On the left side of the palace area is the mountainous area. Well, after the mountain tour, the entire summer resort tour is over. So, what exactly is there to see in these four areas? They are introduced below.
————————————————————

  1. Palace Area
Entering Li Zhengmen leads to the palace area, which also marks the entrance to the Summer Resort Scenic Area. After passing the main gate of Li, there is the second gate of the palace: Yue Shou. There are two bronze lions on both sides in front of the door. When the Japanese came here and saw these two bronze lions, they were filled with joy and wanted to take them away and melt them into copper water to make weapons. They found ten horses and ten cows from the local area to pull them together. Even the bronze lion couldn’t pull it. The Japanese thought it was strange and thought they were protected by gods. The east and west auxiliary halls between Li’s main gate and Yuemen are now the exhibition hall. Entering the gate is the palace area of the Mountain Resort. Now it has been turned into the Museum of the Mountain Resort, where items are displayed as they were when the emperor lived there. The palace area is the main building complex of the summer resort, concentrated at the southern end of the resort. It is where the emperor handles government affairs in daily life and meets with important figures and holds ceremonies. Although this is the emperor’s summer palace, the architectural style is completely different from the Forbidden City in Beijing. The palaces in the Forbidden City are majestic and magnificent, but here they are simple and elegant, with simple wooden pillars and simple bases, low green bricks and gray tiles without any paintings, giving it a northern residential style.

  2. Lake area
After leaving the main palace museum, there is the lake area to the right and the mountainous area to the left. The villa is named after the mountain, but its beauty lies in the water. The lake area covers an area of 57 hectares, and now there are seven lakes and eight islands. The entire lake area is a clear water with scattered islands and beautiful scenery in the south of the Yangtze River. Because the lake area is connected by various small islands, one circle is complete. If you want to see every scenic spot, you will need to walk twice. Go north along Zhijing Yundi, and facing Jinshan Island across the lake on the right front. The stone island is surrounded by lake water, and its artistic conception is very similar to Jinshan Mountain in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu Province. The most famous building in the Lake District is the Yanyu Tower. There are a lot of people coming to Yanyu Tower. After all, it is the filming location of Princess of My Fair Princess. They all come to check in. There are so many people.

  3. Plain area
The plain area can be used for scenic battery car tours. The plain area is mainly composed of Wanshuyuan and Shimadai. Wanshuyuan has a flat terrain and lush forests, which combines the grassland scenery of Mongolia and the forest scenery of the Northeast.
The horse-testing stall is located on the west side of Wanshu Garden, with green grass and winding roads. It was the place where the emperor of the Qing Dynasty selected horses before going to Mulan Paddock to hold the Autumn Festival Ceremony.

  4. Mountain areas
The mountain is closed for fire prevention before June 1 every year, and it is selectively open to tourists during this period. Most tourists spend 50 yuan to buy tickets and travel by bus. You can also walk up the mountain. Before entering the mountain, you need to check the fire, register and you are good to go. The car ride up the mountain only stops three times, at three scenic spots, so it’s a quick tour.
    The first attraction: Simianyun Mountain.
    Can overlook the entire
    Chengde
city. Here you can overlook Qingchui Peak in the distance.
The second parking spot: Erma Road.
This is the city wall of the Summer Resort, also known as the Little Great Wall. The city wall is wide enough for two horses to walk, hence the name Two Horse Road.
    The third stop: Qingfeng Luyu
This is the place where people go on stage to admire the moon on August 15th, and it is also the cold palace for concubines.
You can also encounter wild sika deer on the mountain. They are still very afraid of people and will run away as soon as they get close.
    ———————————————————
The entire summer resort can be visited in one day, but it is quite intensive. There is not much food in the villa, and it is also expensive. It is recommended to bring your own lunch food.
